Washing Silk Pillows: Here’s How

While washing bed sheets is a simple task, most of us feel hesitant about washing comforters. Comforters are bulky and they become bulkier while washing. Therefore, many people prefer getting their comforters dry-cleaned instead of machine washed.

Agreed that comforters are tough to wash; however, did you know that washing the pillows could also be a problem? While pillows require a lot less washing, they need to be thoroughly cleaned when they are being washed. Certain specifications must be followed every time you are washing pillows – particularly the organic ones. Maintained properly pillows last for more then 15 years or so.

WHEN TO WASH PILLOWS

As mentioned before, pillows don’t need frequent washing. You can clean them twice a year, that’s it! However, alter the frequency of washing depending in how much you use the pillows. Washing a pillow ensures that the body odor, the sweat, bacterial and dead skin cells, along with dirt and dust, get removed from the pillows. Because the pillow covers and protectors get soiled more often than the pillows themselves, the covers must be washed at least once a month to ensure that they stay sparkling clean and soft.

The Process of Washing Silk Pillows

Because the fabric of pillows is delicate and extremely soft, you want to make sure that washing them doesn’t deplete their quality. Moreover, since silk is a top quality fabric for comforters and silk pillows, you don’t want to expose them to any process that might harm them even a bit. Therefore, even while washing the covers, be as gentle as possible.

The first thing that you should remember while washing silk pillow covers is that you shouldn’t use bleach on them ever. Secondly, you must use mild soap as well as lukewarm water to wash off the stains from the fabric. A gentle shampoo dissolved in lukewarm water is just right for washing silk pillowcases. You can even add 1/4th cup of vinegar to the soapy solution for cleaning the organic silk filled pillows properly.

If something spills on the fabric accidentally, remove or wipe it off as soon as possible. In case the stain dries off, it will become tougher to clean it later on. Use a gentle stain remover with no bleach content in it to remove the stain.

Last but not the least, if you are thinking about ironing the silk pillow cases, you must do so inside out when the iron is not hot but warm.
